Video SEO — Rank Videos on YouTube AND Google

Video SEO is bigger than YouTube. A properly optimized video can rank inside YouTube, on Google's video carousel, on Bing Video, and inside Google's main search results — all from the same asset.

What is Video SEO?

Video SEO is the practice of optimizing video content so it can be discovered, indexed, and ranked across every search surface that shows video — YouTube search, YouTube recommendations, Google's blue-link results, Google's dedicated Video tab, Google Discover, Bing Video, and even AI overviews that now cite video sources. YouTube SEO is a subset of Video SEO focused on one platform. Video SEO covers the whole ecosystem.

Roughly 62% of Google searches now include a video result somewhere on page one. That means every video you make has two audiences to win: viewers browsing YouTube and searchers typing into Google. The same video can serve both if you set it up correctly.

The three layers of Video SEO

  1. On-video signals — title, description, tags, thumbnail, captions, chapters, file name.
  2. On-page signals — for embedded video, the page around it: heading, transcript, schema, sitemap, page speed.
  3. Off-page signals — backlinks, embeds on other domains, PDF/image/social submissions, brand mentions.

On-video optimization

The on-video layer is identical to the YouTube SEO checklist — keyword-rich title, first-150-character description hook, tags, thumbnail, chapters, uploaded SRT captions, cards, and end screens. This layer alone controls whether YouTube will rank you. But it's only half the story for Google.

On-page optimization (for embedded video)

When you embed a YouTube video on your own site, blog, or landing page, Google indexes thepage — not the video directly. That means the page around the video matters as much as the video itself. To rank the embed:

  • Match H1 to search intent — the page's H1 should target the same keyword as the video's title.
  • Add a full transcript — 400–1500 words of readable transcript above or below the player gives Google real text to index. This alone can rank an embedded video in Google's main results.
  • VideoObject schema (JSON-LD) — the single most important on-page signal. Google uses VideoObject to eligible your video for the Video carousel, Key Moments, and Live badges.
  • Video sitemap — if you host multiple videos, submit a <video:video> sitemap in Google Search Console so Google can crawl every one.
  • Page speed — lazy-load the iframe, use youtube-nocookie.com for privacy, and defer the embed until scroll to keep Core Web Vitals green.
  • Thumbnail as OG image — set the video's high-res thumbnail as the page's og:image so it shows in social shares.
  • Related content — surround the embed with related paragraphs, FAQ blocks, and internal links to related pages. Isolated embeds rank poorly.
Example VideoObject schema: a minimal JSON-LD block with name, description, thumbnailUrl, uploadDate, contentUrl or embedUrl, and duration in ISO 8601 makes your video eligible for Google's Video carousel almost immediately.

Off-page video SEO

Google and YouTube both look at how many other sites reference your video. Off-page signals are especially important for Video SEO because they generate two things simultaneously:

  • Backlinks to the YouTube URL — passes authority to the video page inside Google's index.
  • External embeds — every legitimate site that embeds your video sends YouTube a "this content is worth showing" signal, which boosts recommendations inside YouTube itself.

The core off-page channels I use for every video:

  • Video sharing networks — 270+ video aggregators and community platforms that re-host or link to your video.
  • PDF submissions — 40+ DA 80+ document networks (Scribd, Issuu, SlideShare, Academia.edu) with clickable links to the video.
  • Image submissions — Pinterest, Flickr, and thumbnail-first image networks. A high-CTR thumbnail on Pinterest can drive traffic for years.
  • Social sharing — Facebook, LinkedIn, Reddit, Quora, X, Tumblr. Early social velocity is a documented ranking signal for both YouTube and Google.
  • Web 2.0 blogs — Medium, Blogger, WordPress.com, LiveJournal posts that embed and describe the video.
  • Niche directories — industry-specific listings where a linked video is welcomed as content.

Ranking factors specific to Google Video results

  1. Freshness — Google favors recent uploads for news and how-to topics. Republish or update older videos when relevance shifts.
  2. Transcript match — the closest text-to-query match on the page usually wins.
  3. Domain authority — an embed on a high-DA page ranks faster than the same video on youtube.com alone.
  4. User signals — dwell time on the embed page and click-throughs from Google both count.
  5. Structured data completeness — the more optional VideoObject fields you fill in (uploadDate, thumbnailUrl, publisher, keywords, transcript), the more eligible the video is for rich results.

Video SEO for e-commerce and SaaS

Product pages with an embedded demo video convert 80% better than pages without one and rank higher because Google now weighs "helpful video" as a quality signal. For every important product or feature, ship a 60–120 second demo, embed it above the fold, add a transcript, and mark it up withVideoObject schema. This is the single highest-ROI Video SEO play for businesses.

How long does Video SEO take?

  • Week 1–2: video indexed on YouTube and Google, first impressions arrive.
  • Week 3–6: rankings settle. Off-page work starts moving competitive keywords.
  • Month 2–4: Google Video carousel placements, Key Moments, and long-tail rankings compound.
  • Month 6+: the video enters "evergreen" mode — steady daily traffic with no extra work.
